Lake Wabamun is one of the most popular recreational lakes in Alberta, and its shorelines are very well developed. Surrounding Lake Wabamun are several villages, extensive cottage development, the Paul Band reserve, Lake Wabamun Provincial Park, a scout camp, a golf course and other recreational facilities. Lake Wabamun is also a regional center for sailing. The lake supports a commercial whitefish fishery, winter angling for lake whitefish, and summer angling for northern pike. Agriculture is also an important activity in the basin. TransAlta owns and operates two strip coal mines near the north and south shores of the lake, in addition to two coal-fired power plants adjacent to the mines. The Wabamun Power Plant near Kapasiwin Bay began operations in 1956. The Wabamun Power Plant uses lake-water for cooling, and cooling water discharge is returned to the lake. The Sundance Power Plant began operations in 1971, but ceased discharging cooling water to the lake in 1975.
